Leadership Information

Fundamentals
Keeping Them Fresh

Every week Paul Foss sends out the weekly outline for our table meetings.  All are key elements each week at the table that need to be covered.  Yet the reality is, we do not have enough time to cover each item in detail as we probably should.  So the question becomes, where are you going to put most of your energy and time?

This is meant to share some ideas on how to cover the fundamentals of the table each week.  These are just some of many creative and God inspired ideas you can use.  It will help keep things fresh.

  • Step one is the 3 P’s.  PREPARE, PLAN and PRAY.  Don’t just show up.  Pray about what God wants you to focus on.  Allow the Holy Spirit to guide your approach each week.  Each leader is different.  Each table is different (size, make up, needs..).  Go through each aspect…Prayer, Announcements, Memory Verse, Invite, Calls, SOAP…..what is God saying to you about each one?  Usually it will become very obvious what your table and men need to be challenged with each week.
  • To begin, periodically you may want to mix up the order of the outline.  Start right out of the block with the SOAP for example.  The outline is a very good flow.  You are not bound by the order, the ‘ASK’ is that you cover all the points as a regular part of each gathering.
  • Prayer
    • Some weeks you may have a pressing need to spend an inordinate time in prayer. That’s OK.  We are in a spiritual battle.
    • Break up in pairs.
    • Have everyone pray.  Have them pray for themselves or a neighbor.
    • Sometimes when a man shares a burden you may need to stop the meeting and go right into prayer.
  • Announcements
    • Get your men involved in sharing announcements if they are involved in a project.
    • Be sure to get men involved in sharing testimony of activities they have been involved in.
  • Scripture Memory Verse
    • Each week you need ask your men, who memorized the verse. You yourself need to have this memorized as a mentoring and modeling for your men.  You start realizing as a whole your table needs to do better in this area. You have been talking and talking about it but it is still not getting results. Maybe it is time to spend a little extra time to have a frank discussion.
    • What are the obstacles and struggles? Have testimonies from men that are succeeding week in and week out.  What do they do that causes this to become part of their lives?
    • Ask each man yes or no, did you memorize it?  Keep track.  Make it goal of 100%.  Raise the bar.
    • Have each man write it out.
    • Give the gift of time by giving each man a few minutes to memorize on the spot.
    • Ask at random what the verse means to them.
    • Ask for testimonies of how God spoke to them through the verse.
  • SOAP
  • Press in at times with follow up questions.  The men will let you know how far they are willing to let you pry.  Get them out of their comfort zone.  Men appreciate this.  After the meeting men will often say, “wow, what a great meeting today.”
  • Affirm your men.
  • Be sure all men are praying in agreement, don’t get caught up in just listening to their prayer.
  • Making the Call
  • Ask who did not get a call.  Find out who was supposed to call them.  Talk about why.
  • Put names in the pile of those who are not present.  This will mean an extra call but everyone appreciates being missed.
  • Intentionally state who did not come.  Talk about these men.  Pray together for wisdom to know how to reach out from an overflow of love.
  • Scraps
  • Give an example from your life.
  • Keep stretching yourself. Finds new ways to free up Scraps.  Share this with your men.  Challenge your men to do the same.
  • Have a different man each week share what they are doing.
  • Talk in depth on occasion about what Scraps really mean.  We all need to be reminded.
  • Share how Scraps are being used by the Waterboyz for the Kingdom’s work.
  • Inviting Men to the Table
  • Ask them who they invited this week.
  • Ask them who they are going to invite next week.
  • Ask them to write down names.  Pull the list out each week.
  • Is asking part of their life?
  • Dig deeper.  What is keeping us from asking?
  • God Question
  • Is it God inspired?
  • Ask more than one.
  • Ask them to ask their wife or children the same question.
  • Ask them how they experienced God this week.  Do they see God in their daily life?
  • Tie the God question into the weekly chapter and verse.
  • Miscellaneous
  • Some weeks you may feel you need to develop more community.  Getting to know each other better.
  • Are the men in the word everyday?  Perhaps you need to spend a little more time on this.  It’s not about once a week but everyday.  How do you hold them accountable and challenge each other?
  • Be sure you lighten things up at times. Are the men enjoying each others company?  Laughing together?
  • Final Thoughts
  • You will likely find that if you are not doing it you are not asking your men to do it.
  • We are truly helping to equip our men for battle.
      • A battle for stronger marriages
      • A battle for raising Godly children
      • A battle for being salt and light in the workplace and community we live
      • A battle against the adversary and worldly ways
      • A battle against our selfish and sinful nature
      • A battle to build up the church and reach the corners of the earth with the Gospel
    • You will likely find that if you are not doing it you are not asking your men to do it.
    • Find out what God is doing at your table and join Him. Often all we do is ask God to join us.
